I actually started having fun.The book is filled with excellent, actionable advice on finding a topic, creating a proposal, crafting a customized biography, and outlining and practicing your talk. Great stuff – but just as important is the guidance about the ‘inner game’ of public speaking – presenting from a place of confidence and goodwill.The book has a quote: “generosity is the root of excellent public speaking.†Generosity is also at the root of this excellent book.
I have to give tech presentations once or twice a year and always dread it. This book changed that. I'm still far from perfect, but at least this last round the nerves didn't kick in and I felt more prepared. And I was. I learned there is so much more to presenting than great slides. Slides shouldn't be the primary focus but instead come last. This approach to preparing really changes things (for the better). Well be referring to this book for every presentation in the future until it's second nature.

It is highly recommended especially if you want to improve and enhance your communication skills which are key to your personal and professional development. I bought this book two weeks before I was going to give a talk in a local meetup group. The book helped me in many ways. I particularly liked the focus on creating a story that people can relate to. While my talk could have been better (I need more practice), the "tell a story" approach helped people get hooked to the presentation. I noticed that everyone in the audience seemed to pay attention during the whole talk - which may not be much but is a big improvement from my previous talks! The book is full of similar tips, it's very objective and condensed. I can recommend it for those who wants to get better at giving presentations or talks.

I'm a software engineer, and I'm interested in improving public speaking for 2 main reasons:1. I've heard too many stories of people getting overlooked for promotions or undervalued for their work because they didn't speak up.2. I can get comfortable sharing my own experiences to help other learn and grow. Speakers I admire generally have a conversational tone and share stories.However, public speaking can be confusing - where do you start? The book provides clear exercises so beginners can get ramped up i.e. record 2 minutes of you talking about your favorite dessert. The authors also share plenty of their own experiences with public speaking, and the book is very relatable. Overall, this book does a good job of breaking down public speaking and focuses on its practical applications i.e. presenting at casual Meetup events, conferences, meetings.

I read the book while preparing for my first tech demo to my larger team, and it helped me overcome the fear of presenting. In fact, by the night before the demo, I was excited to talk in front of my team and at the prospect of speaking more in the future.The main thing that keeps me from speaking publicly is that it seems like a magical thing that only certain people know how to do. But after reading Present!, I realize that my main inhibitor was that I didn't know the detailed steps to get from start to finish of creating and giving a talk (along with the lesser-discussed steps like promoting the talk and distributing it after having given it). Present! gave me what I needed: clear, straightforward, detailed steps, all of which are accompanied by very simple, easy-to-follow activities. I feel that I now have the tools to give a talk at a conference and a variety of other situations. Though many parts of the book are geared toward speaking in a conference where you develop a topic, pitch your talk, and then create and give a talk after it has been accepted, the tips are applicable to all kinds of talks, and there are sections with step-by-step guides for a variety of situations: e.g. lightning talks, long-form talks, speaking at meetings, podcasts.Because Poornima and Karen thought through a checklist of things that are needed for each kind of talk, and because I trust the thoroughness of their checklists due to their years of experience in speaking, I feel I can just follow their steps and not reinvent the wheel of figuring out how to give a talk. All I need to do are fill in my thoughts and go through the activities provided, and I feel confident I would be able to give a talk in each scenario. I also feel encouraged that I have things to offer an audience (I love the book's emphasis that a great talk comes from a place of generosity toward the audience), whereas before I was hesitant to feel like I had anything that others would be interested to hear.I plan to read through this book again multiple times as I give more talks, and I just purchased a copy to share with my team for help with their talks.
